Why did I start

Ty's Pies?

It all started in 2017 when I was in the sixth grade. I found myself watching baking contest TV shows like the Kids Baking Championship and the Great British Baking Show. As I watched, I was in awe of how some kids my age could use a few ingredients and create something so beautiful and delicious. This inspired me to try out the world of baking. As I baked cakes, cookies, and pies, I felt on top of the world. I continued to explore and discovered that I loved baking cakes and experimenting with new kinds of baking for family and friends. Seeing the excited faces of my friends and family, I loved sharing my baked goods for them to feast. I would even occasionally bring cookies, cakes, and homemade ice cream for classmates to taste.

KEY LIME PIE FOR A CAUSE ... Tyler Wong loves to bake. The 9th grader and Duveneck-St. Francis resident is now selling his signature dessert — key lime pies — and using money from sales to help people in need. "I started baking when I was in 6th grade. I really liked baking for my friends and loved seeing their reactions when they tasted my desserts. During the COVID-19 crisis, I wanted to help families in need. I decided to donate to Ecumenical Hunger Program in East Palo Alto, helping to feed families struggling to make ends meet," he said. From Aug. 9-15 alone, he baked 14 key lime pies, raising $160 for EHP. To buy a pie or a slice, contact tylertaowong@gmail.com
